Cinco de Mayo 5k and Other Random Things

Last weekend I did a 5k with some friends.  Two had signed up to run the 10k but when race day came they decided they only wanted to do 5k instead. Another friend was going to walk the 5k with me, and another friend was going to run the 5k but came up injured so she walked the 5k with us as well.  It was a very small local race but I think it was very well organized.  They even had us doing Zumba moves at the start as a warm up - corny but fun. Honestly, I was only in it to see some friends and for the breakfast afterwards - and I wasn't disappointed with either!

Another race, another tee shirt.
The Catfish swim is coming up in a few weeks - I guess I better sign up! I've been stalling since I wasn't sure if I want to do it with or without a wetsuit. A few weeks ago, I found out that it's not going to be at the same lake as last year. And since I'm completely unfamiliar with this new location, I think I'm going to sign up for the wetsuit division. I'd rather have my security blanket with me in unfamiliar waters.

I haven't made it back to masters since I went on vacation in March. First I was trying to focus more on spin class to prepare for the Moraga Tri, but that was weeks ago and I still can't get myself to go back - but I have finally figured out why. There are only two workouts a week that work for me - Monday & Wednesday nights.  The other weeknight workouts focus on IM - I don't know butterfly, I can't breastroke because of my hip, and my backstroke isn't straight. But the Monday & Wednesday night workouts are exclusively freestyle.

I was feeling guilty that I can't always make it both nights. But it dawned on me that it really doesn't matter how often I go as long as I just go when I can. I'm the one paying for it - and it is ridiculously cheap at my gym - so I shouldn't feel guilty if I can only make it once a week. And just because I can only make it to masters once a week doesn't mean I'm not swimming - I've been trying to get there every weekend because they switch the pool to long-course which I love. And I've swam on nights or mornings when I couldn't make masters. So I might as well get at least on workout a week that I'm paying for!

And finally I've been pretty consistent with my strength training workouts the past few weeks. It's something I always say I'm going to focus on, but it always gets dropped due to tri training. Let's face it, trying to get in two sessions of three different sports every week doesn't leave much time for strength training - at least not the kind that I want to do. But since I've really only been focused on swimming lately (and I haven't been on the bike or at spin class since Moraga), I've had more time to do strength training.

  1. Sounds like a fun little race :) Sounds like your gym is very swimmer friendly. I would love if ours offered some classes or workout times.

  3. I was wondering if you guys did that race! Love the shirt.

I can only get to the actual masters workout one day a week. But our coach leaves the workout for us, so when i come swim at lunch time I can still swim the workout. Also, your backstroke doesn't have to be straight, mine isn't either. Get yourself some fins to learn butterfly. It's now my third favorite stroke. Focus on kicking only no arms, once you get the fly kick down you can work on adding arms. Ask your coach for pointers or tips, that's what they are their for. My coach always gives me modifications if they need them because of an injury etc.

  4. Strength training is always the first thing to go in my training, but I'm trying to be better about it. And I wish I had a masters swim somewhere near me. The closest is an hour away!
